While there is a love story, A Song to Drown Rivers is not a romance novel however it has a beautiful love story woven throughout it. While Fanli is training Xishi they cannot help but grow close but both are committed to their missions and to save the kingdom of Yue. When she arrives in the kingdom of Wu the enemy king, Fuchai is not the evil tyrant she is prepared for, instead he shows her gentleness and kindness and a love triangle develops. This book had so many painfully beautiful and tragic moments woven throughout it but the twists at the end shattered me in a way only a great author can.
