3 Sentence Summary:

Xishi is known to the villagers of Yue for her beauty and one day the young military advisor Fanli presents her with an opportunity to use her beauty as a weapon and save her kingdom. All she has to do is become a spy, make the king of Wu fall for her and weaken the kingdom from the inside, all with Fanli's guidance and training. Despite knowing the roles they both must play the attraction between Fanli and Xishi continues to burn but once she is in the enemy palace, the king's advisors are watching her and the enemy king doesn't show her the brutality she is expecting.

Why I recommend it:

A Song to Drown Rivers inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China is a captivating and heartbreaking story of womanhood, war, sacrifice and love as Xishi tries to save her kingdom. While there is a love story, A Song to Drown Rivers is not a romance novel however it has a beautiful love story woven throughout it. While Fanli is training Xishi they cannot help but grow close but both are committed to their missions and to save the kingdom of Yue. When she arrives in the kingdom of Wu the enemy king, Fuchai is not the evil tyrant she is prepared for, instead he shows her gentleness and kindness and a love triangle develops. This book had so many painfully beautiful and tragic moments woven throughout it but the twists at the end shattered me in a way only a great author can.
